Intellectual Property Rights, Brands Protection & Creative Industries

The European Union Academic Programme Hong Kong, in collaboration with the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and the European Brands Protection Council, are organizing a series of Intellectual Property Rights conferences/seminars/competition between September and December 2013.

The activities target different audience groups with the goal of fostering IPR dialogue between the EU and HK/China, explaining current IPR policies and raising public awareness.

    Topic: Hong Kong – European Union Cooperation in Protecting and Developing Intellectual Property and Brands: Current Situation and Future Trends

    The conference focuses on the current state and future of intellectual property rights protection and enforcement in Europe and Hong Kong. It seeks to enhance effectively the collaborative working relationships between IP/brand owners, law enforcement officials, IP Departments, investigators and industry organizations in the two regions. It will feature interactive panel discussions and presentations to provide participants an opportunity to obtain insights from the participating experts on recent intellectual property rights protection and enforcement successes and challenges as well as an outlook on future IP trends in the region.

    2: IP Creative Competition

    EUAP is pleased to invite all talented students to join the second activity of the IPR series 2013---Warm-up Seminar "Protecting Creativity & Innovation: IPR for Products, Brands & Services”. From this seminar, you will learn about what IPR protection is and why it is relevant to you. This seminar is the launching event of the Creative Competition 2013.

    Competition details:


    The main theme of the competition is protection for creativity and innovation, and it will be carried out in three stages.


    The Mascot serves as a unifying visual element for the awareness campaign. It should be used in all subsequent competition entries (visual arts competition and mobile film production) and as a signature element of the entire campaign. The mascot should be produced in a two-dimensional format such as drawing. Entrants must participate individually.



    Stage 2: Visuals Arts Competition

    (Oct 30 – Nov 30 2013)

    Competition entries should incorporate notions of Europe and European consumer brands into their creations and the mascot (or variations thereof) should be a constituent part of each entry. They can be in all art forms/media formats, two or three-dimensional, a single work or a portfolio of two or more works. Entrants must participate individually.



    Stage 3: Short Film Production

    (from Oct 30)

    The mobile short films should not be longer than 7 minutes, and they should be full and finished competition entries and be able to use in social media contexts. The mascot (or variations thereof) should also be a constituent part of each entry. Entrants can participate individually or as small-group work with maximum 3 group members.

    * All competition entries should be submitted in digital format.


    Awards

    Each champion of the three categories will receive a cash award of HK$15,000 from the European Chamber of Commerce. First runner-ups and second runner-ups of each category will receive certificates from the European Chamber of Commerce and the European Union Academic Programme.

    *The results of the competition will be published in social media, web and press releases of the EUAP and the ECC/EBPC.


    Judges

    A judging panel will be formed by the representatives of the HKBU Academy of Visual Arts, HK Design Institute and HKBU Academy of Film, European Union Academic Programme, the European Chamber of Commerce and the European Brands Protection Council.

    • Cyber IP Law - Google AdWords and Trademark Rights: the European and Hong Kong Approaches
      A lot of disputes arose in relation with the use of the Google Adwords Service. These disputes captured the attention of scholars, occupied judges and lawyers, while Google, trademarks owners and users of the service were holding their breath... Google AdWords is a service that can boost website traffic by offering users to choose specific keywords in order to get a better position with the Google search engine. The two main issues that will be addressed during this seminar are the following: 1.) Is choosing and using keywords that are identical or similar to third parties' trademarks constitutes an infringement of these trademarks? 2.) Should Google, as an Internet service provider, be liable when users of its AdWords service choose to use keywords that are identical or similar to third parties' trademarks?
