About 400 guests attended briefing sessions for admission in 2012. In the new Hong Kong-wide study system, European Studies will remain a 'stand-alone' programme with direct admission to Year I. It will also retain its special features, among them rapid and very intensive language learning, a focus on history/culture, politics and social affairs of French/German-speaking areas of Europe and the EU, a whole year to be spent in European partner universities, and close cooperation with businesses and public bodies in/of European Union member states. In the past years, European Studies was among the academic programmes with the highest JUPAS entry scores and excellent track records of graduates.

Guest Talk by Dr. Matthias Harder, Chief Curator at the Foundation Helmut Newton in Berlin and Professor at the Freie Universität Berlin
The European Studies Programme invited the curator of the exhibition "Scenes and Traces of a Fall" Dr. Matthias Harder to speak to its students about the context of the photographs shown in the exhibition. During the talk and in the ensuing discussion Dr. Harder explained in length not only about the historical background to the photographs but also about the exact moments in which the photographs were taken and their journalistic and photographic value.

Exclusive Preview for European Studies students of the exhibition 'Scenes and Traces of a Fall' at the Goethe Institute Wanchai. Introduction by Dr. Gabriele Gauler, new Director of the GI Hong Kong

“Scenes and Traces of a Fall” is the title of an exhibition of the works of 21 renowned photo journalists from around the world who have documented the years just before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The exhibition was first shown at the Brandenburg Gate Foundation in Berlin to commemorate 20 years of the fall of the Berlin Wall and is currently touring Asia.

Guest Lecture by Mr. Christian Werle, CEO of Eurogroup (Far East) Ltd.
Sourcing and supply of Chinese consumer products for European countries is a major occupational field for European Studies graduates - and therefore studied in-depth in the German Stream (Year IV). Mr. Werle (who is also Member of the Advisory Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences) held a 3-hour seminar with students and discussed issues of supply chain management for European retail chains (among them the German REWE group, Coop in Switzerland and bauMax in Austria. The focus of discussion was on product safety and the (social and ecological) sustainability of consumer-product manufacturing in China.
